Plays sent by fax or e-mail will not be accepted.  Only one of the submitted copies must mention the name and other particulars of the playwright. The other two copies are to mention only the title of the play. Upon receipt of each play, the Secretary of the competition appointed by the Foundation will allocate to it a number and a date (year) identifying it from all other plays. The Secretary will then register the play under this number/year and submit the play to the juries without disclosing the name of the author. After the decision for granting the awards, the Secretary of the competition will disclose the names of the winners to the Board of Directors of the Foundation and to the members of the juries. The public announcement of the winners identities will be made by the President of the Board of Directors of the Foundation.

6. Supporting documents:
Each playwright must submit or send to the Foundation together with his/her play:
a) The Curriculum Vitae of the author with particular emphasis on his/her theatrical activities.
b) A certificate by the Playwrights Association from the playwright's country, or other competent public authority that at least one of his/her plays has been performed on stage by a professional troupe, or a certificate by a theatrical school or a known drama critic or a dramaturgist that the particular play has the basic requisites for participating in an international competition for an original theatrical play.
c) A declaration by the writer that his/her play is original, has not been published, performed on stage and has not constituted the basis of a scenario of a film or of a television production.
d) A declaration by the writer that he/she agrees that after the end of the competition, his/her play be accessible to third parties for research, critical appreciation or other professional reasons, waiving all responsibility of the Foundation.
e) A declaration by the writer that he/she accepts unconditionally all the conditions of the competition incorporated in the present announcement.

7. Type of plays:
Drama of any kind of a reasonable length based on word are accepted. Musical opera, operetta, pantomime, poetry, silent happenings or adaptations of any sort are not accepted.

8. Language of the play's composition:
The plays should be written in one of the following languages: English, French, German, Greek, Italian or Spanish.

9. Translation of the plays:
Unless the play is originally written in Greek, English, or French all other plays should be accompanied by a translation in Greek or English, according to the author's preference and under his own responsibility for the purpose of a preliminary evaluation as to whether the play fulfills the basic requirements for the competition. Plays that in the opinion of the First Jury meet the requirements of the competition will be subsequently judged by a Second Jury. The members of the Second Jury will each have as mother tongue one of the aforementioned languages and will judge each play in its original language provided it is one of the six languages referred to above.

10. Selection of the winning plays:
All plays selected by both these two sets of Juries are then submitted to the final judgement of a Third Jury, which - in a joint meeting with the Onassis International Prizes Committee - will present the plays recommended for an award to the Board of Directors of the Foundation for a final decision.  The Foundation will assign to third parties (Greeks and non-Greeks) designated at its discretion (University Theatre professors, drama critics, or other artists professionally involved in the theatre) the task of selecting the winning plays. Within a year from the expiry of the submission date, and in any event no later than the 30th June 2004, the Foundation will select the prevailing plays which, at the discretion of the Foundation's Committees, will participate in the final stage of the competition. The announcement of the winning plays shall not mention any rationale. The personal presence of the winners in Athens on the eve and during the award ceremony at the place and date and time designated freely by the Foundation is a condition sine qua non for the award of the prize and its payment. All travelling and accommodation expenses for the winners and one other person selected by each of them, and not under 15 years of age, shall be borne by the Foundation. Before the Awards Ceremony, the Board of Directors of the Foundation will choose at its discretion how many of the distinction winners will be invited to be present, and to whom the same provisions regarding accommodation and travelling expenses will be applicable.

14. Payment of the Prizes - Settlement of disputes:
The prize-monies are to be paid to the winners as follows: Half of the prize-money shall be paid on the day of the award ceremony and the other half after a lapse of three (3) months from the date of the Award Ceremony provided that in the meantime objections or challenges concerning the play's paternity or originality will not be lodged with the Foundation. In any case, the Foundation is entitled to (but not obligated), before any payment to request legal documents from the Prize Winner or his/her heirs, as well as evidence about the paternity or the originality of the awarded play. In case that a safe conclusion cannot be reached by the Foundation, the matter shall be referred to the Athens Court, which shall have exclusive jurisdiction for the settlement of all disputes. The distinction prize-monies will be paid without the above-mentioned restrictions.

15. The subject of the plays:
The theme of the play should not offend human values. Plays with purely local content, without broader interest, are excluded from the competition. Likewise, plays which have participated in previous competitions organised by the Onassis Foundation are excluded. However, plays which have participated in other competitions, without obtaining any distinction, are not excluded. The Foundation reserves the right not to award any prize or distinction if, at its discretion, none of the works submitted are of a hight artistic standard.

Accessibility to the works is to be allowed to drama critics and other academically interested parties at no fee and not for profit, subject to all author's copyrights but without responsibility to the Foundation.  For the copies of the plays which did not win a prize or a distinction the author's wishes are followed as to their disposal, according to his/her statement made at the time of submission of the plays, and if no such statement in writing is made at the time of submission of the play, then the play will be destroyed not earlier than six (6) months from the announcement of the awards.
